US trade leverage has not been exploited or even contemplated in recent years because so many US elites in and out of government have been bought by China.
Yes! You totally get it right. This is nearly all about further isolating China. Could it break their bank? It might also be about funding some tax breaks for the lowest 50% of America earners. I’ve suffered plenty of paper losses but I love what is occurring. The most consequential POTUS in my lifetime and it’s been less than 100 days. Go Mainstreet!
China is faced with two choices: wage war, by attempting to seize Taiwan, or enter into negotiations with the US.
That’s it.
As for the war choice, when you have nothing else to lose or in this case, everything, they may just be that desperate. But Xi’s position himself as China’s ruler, appears at present, to not be all that stable. Many tremors have been perceived within the ruling class of late giving a sense of some sort of shake-up going on. Could that be directed toward dissenters of Xi, or the reverse? Who knows right now. But there’s a realignment of sorts going on there.
Right now all eyes are fixed on China. And there’s a whole heck of a lot riding on what path they decide to do down. And one that could very well threaten to take us all down with them.
Our ace in the hole in such a scenario is- once again, Trump. They’ve got to know he would not hesitate to throw the whole military kitchen sink at them if he had to. And unless they know for certain they could win without destroying themselves in the process, they’d best think hard and long about their next move.
The global economy is totally imbalanced and the US can no longer sustain running a -$1T annual trade deficit, -$1.8T annual fiscal deficit, with -$900B (and rising quickly) of that going towards interest payments on the debt.
Meanwhile, China still pegs the yuan against the dollar to ensure they can dump products in the US while threatening Taiwan, and the EU is so unserious that they continue to purchase Russian oil & gas while pretending that British/French peacekeepers will someday patrol the eastern front. Good luck with that.
And yet it feels like we're being told to HODL DJT crypto coins. No one knows what is going on, and while we can surmise Trump's motivations are to isolate China, then why did he just delay the Tik Tok ban by another 75 days?
Thanks for this enlightening post which can be summed up in the line: "In other words, it's about China, stupid." This harkens back to the now famous James Carville line: It's the economy, stupid." This came during the Clinton presidential campaign in 1992. These Scroll posts have brought into laser sharp focus what the Trump economic strategy is all about -- something that I'd never focused on before but which has been so evident for so long that I find it amazing no one has thought to explain it this way -- "The end of Factory Asia."
"We cannot rely on our defense umbrella while protecting your markets from our goods and helping to enrich China."
The context suggests that this was directed at the Europeans. So was this perhaps intended to say: "YOU cannot rely on our defense umbrella while protecting your markets from our goods and helping to enrich China."? Would make more sense to me.
This sums it up perfectly. What is an Ally? If you have a friend that talks bad about you behind your back but still wants to go out to dinner if you are buying, is that a friend you are afraid to lose?
You’re falling all over yourself for Trump. I notice that you didn’t include Bill Ackman’s tweet which was powerfully against the tariffs even tho he supported Trump.
And you didn’t explain why Trump has a special hate on for Canada.
The fentanyl claims were errors or lies. See the most recent article about it in the Globe and Mail.
Canada is a trustworthy ally. And although Trump claimed that no NATO country has ever helped the USA, Canada lost some terrific people in Kandahar supporting the US led coalition there for many years.
You did admit the tariff plan is uncertain but that seem pefunctory. I got the feeling that the article was mainly a rah-rah post for you favourite boy.
Ram, what does that have to do with tariffs and breaking Trump's own USMCA trade agreement?
PS: There was an election in Ontario that repudiated the request to have sharia as an alternate legal system for family cases.
There are currently regular protests, it's true, with people praying en masse on main streets but that's because a war is going on and the chief of police thinks that avoiding confrontation with demonstrators is the best way to deal with them.

Certainly consequential...though I'm more concerned if I'll still have a job by the time all of this shakes out.
I hope you retain you job Hutch. Hang in there and please excuse my excitement for you and others who live in fear of tariff consequences 😌
Provided it's not a in the federal government or dependent on it, I would expect things will work out for you.

Buckle up.

With 104% tariffs, this really isn’t rocket science!

Canada is making itself into an imitation Europe, complete with Sharia potential.
