I didn't go to a fancy prep school, only public schools all over the country (we moved several times because Dad was in the Air Force). I was schooled in the 50s and 60s when school was not brutal, but demanding. We had rules and discipline; we were expected to be respectful to our teachers and other adults. Today's schools cater to the whims of the kids and the often silly demands of the helicopter parents. The U.S. was a leader in education for decades. I think we are now something like #39. It's a sad commentary, and our lack of real leadership is a pathetic result.
