Gender as a social conduct. Not only a costume, but a character that’s played. A sculpting of the tone of voice, the body’s shape and movement to look and sound the part—and then a script, more or less improvised on, that emits predictable signals that return certain responses.

And it’s not enough to just catch attention, one has to capture it for long enough to extract the desired resource—be it love or power or money or fame.

Katherine love how your mind is like a bower bird- putting all the bits that get your attention into some sort of beautiful thing. Love your writing. Great piece from the vault!

You should credit Revolver News and its writers, which popularized Male-to-Male, a superior version of this analysis.

I'm not talking shit about her piece more broadly, but I feel invested in this meme and want people to see its first best incarnation.

Hey there-- I think it's coincidental, I didn't even know about this article!

But since a lot of folks are claiming to have invented or popularized this term, "FTF" and "MTM" are decades-old, both as terms AND concepts. The French artist ORLAN is often credited with *popularizing it*, though not necessarily inventing it.

I've also been writing about this type of gender expression since 2019: I don't think it's one of these things that has a clear starting point that can be 'stolen' since the tenets are pretty deeply rooted in most scholarship/discourse about gender. The thing that's "new" about this piece is applying this lens to a specific TikTok subculture, not the terms or philosophy used.

And yes, FCH, you were kind of being a jerk here.

Your comment about Orlan caught my eye because I once served as her interpreter when she was touring in the US. I'd be curious to hear more about how you see her involvement in this trend because she is not only from a totally different generation, she is culturally very different. (Ideologically, she is almost "all school" in spite of the little artistic horns on her forehead.)

I don't know who you are but you put words on a a phenomena I am trying to express for years. One more question what are the root causes and where is sexual market heading with this trend?
