Another aspect of this tactic is 10 years after it's over and the extent of the damage to victims' lives becomes clearer, the same class of people can simply respond "it was based on the best science at the time," revising out of history all the skeptics and bogus activist-driven studies.
Excellent, and damning. The Yawn is a perfect description of something I have noticed but did not try to define, and reminds me of Siegel’s coining and delineation of “az-uhs” back in June 2020 in, “the New Truth,” an essay I have tattooed on my forearm:
“Have you noticed how many people, especially online, start their statements by telling you their profession or their identity group: ‘As a privileged white woman; as a doctoral student in applied linguistics; as a progressive Jewish BIPOC paleontologist’—and so on? These are military salutes, which are used to establish rank between fellow “az-uhs” while distinguishing them as a class from the civilian population.”
I read that essay when it was posted/published and a few times a week ever since I see someone use this tone. Each time I think, “Uh-oh, this guy’s another az-uh.” I now expect to think “here’s a Yawn” about as frequently.
Problem is the British Health Service will soon publish a longer term follow up study of trans male health and MH outcomes observed post puberty blockers and cross sex hormones. Since they have already closed a major clinic and ruled Judicially that children 16 or under cannot consent, the results are unlikely to be pretty. Even the BBC is curbing their former enthusiasm. Better standby for news that will be hard to ignore but can not doubt be spun but with a much greater effort than before.
I'm late to the party, but this is a brilliant article with a brilliant title. I look forward to referencing it next time someone yawns at me.
After lowering the age of consent to 14 for children to receive puberty blockers and surgery, which was troubling enough, WPATH has now changed it again--to _no_ minimum age requirement at all.
The yawn is over how plainly fake it is for transphobic conservatives to express concerns over the well being of trans children. The proper reaction to alligator tears is to yawn.
The health and happiness of trans teens is simply not a problem from a conservative point of view. The problems for conservatives are - as you put it here - protecting established conventions, preventing social engineering, stopping large-scale social transformation.
The chattering classes have consistently appeased evil-especially Nazism and Communism , and the three branches of American Marxism of systemic racism, gender fluidity and climate change
Jacob, I just discovered your writing on Tablet reading your article on secrecy . I was so impressed by your writing, that it lead my here, to THE SCROLL. Love your article on the “yawn culture”, what a great way of describing it and I’m looking forward to hearing more from you.
So you are so upset about girls getting masectomies that you vote for people that want them to carry their rapists' babies to term, even if it kills them. Thank you for your service.
The Evil of Banality

The collective yawn described above is the appeasement of evil

This article, though correct, is terribly boring.🥱
Good stuff. All of this is really just about How Things Look. That's it.

The Yawn: Soma-induced.
