Count me as one who read the comments as referring to something still awful in this day and age of almost no awfulness: child molester? murderer? Was it really clear that what was referred to was the possibility that the guy liked guys?

Fortunately, the accusation or exposure being gay no longer carries that punch. In the spy cases running from the 1950s to recently, money was always the main or only motive. The counterintelligence folks slowly figured this out in the 1970s and 80s, to the point of de facto dropping the search for closeted gay people, in favor of unannounced, unilateral access to the bank account information of people with clearances -- that was far more effective, although not perfect (e.g., Walker and Ames). But it wasn't a waste of time and money.

The tweet by Wesley Yang that you chose to publicize is a sad piece of intolerance. Every day there are any number of declared observances of special days to promote this or that. Today, February 7th is National Periodical Table Day and National Fettuccine Alfredo Day. Why make a thing out of this? Is this the kind of thing you would want to be remembered for?
