I want to express my deep gratitude for the writing and thinking Tablet supports. I found Tablet during the “pandemic” and have stayed. I’m not Jewish. I was raised by Evangelical Christian parents (deceased) with a profound respect for Judaism and Israel. My father studied with rabbis (learning some Hebrew) and worked with them politically as part of a small “interfaith” group in Toronto (where I continue to live). When her children were adults, my mother spent a year in Israel teaching dance. She subscribed to the Jerusalem Post and used a Jewish calendar. Since Oct. 7, my personal focus has been learning as much as I can (starting from a place of acknowledging my ignorance - wish more people would do that) and The Tablet and the Scroll have been enormously helpful. You are so right and I’m lucky. I live in Montreal which has an incredible Jewish network. I attribute this to the fact that Montreal has a large Sephardic population and are very involved with Jewish life. We also are lucky to have many vibrant young leaders to take us into the future. But, we are an anomaly. Even Toronto Jews are more liberal , like their American counterparts. We must engage and encourage our younger generation to face the challenges head on and not bury their heads in the sand.
About 48 years ago, I married into a highly educated, Brooklyn Jewish family. Not an obvious match for a rural Midwest, Irish Catholic VN veteran or them. It all worked and I have learned a lot from it. My relatives have all visited Israel, stayed on the Kibbutz, bought the bonds for my children, etc. However, any military action Israel has taken since 1973 is an open sore easily ignored and they never criticize, nor even mention, any foreign policy decision made by the Democratic establishment. How the current unpleasantness will impact them, I have yet to discover. The undeniable domestic support for Hamas just might be a wake up call but I would not bet on it.
Follow the money and get off the couch is the best start. It pains me for this is a dark spot on President Biden that hurts deep. He has at least publicly stood for Israel.
